Key West Shines in November

We truly enjoy the best of all possible worlds here in Key West. Our potent mix of cultures and backgrounds gives a unique flavor to the island that captures not only the tropical setting but also the quintessential American melting pot experience. Our line-up of early November events is a great example.

On Saturday, November 10, ValnChz Productions presents the International Latin Arts Festival, ¡Esperando Nacer! This is a celebration of Latin culture from Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Uruguay, Brazil, Cuba and Mexico. It takes place at the San Carlos Institute and features folkloric dance and percussion workshops, artists’ exhibits, tours of the institute, and an exclusive afternoon preview show of the evening’s main event. At 8:00 p.m., a theatrical concert takes place in the San Carlos Theatre Auditorium with guest musicians Rolando Rojas, Andrés Cisneros, Roberto Barton, Dave Parker, Melody Cooper, and Ray West and featured dancers Oscar Caballero and Roxana Garber of Miami’s Tango Times Dance Company. In addition, an interactive event, ¡Eu Quero Dancar!, featuring local dancers and a capoiera demonstration by Jan Czerny, completes the evening. Tickets for the main event are available online at www.keystix.com or by calling 305-295-7676.

The fun continues on Sunday, November 11, with a visit to the Sheriff’s Animal Farm. The Farm is open for visitors every second and fourth Sunday of the month between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. The Farm houses horses, a cow, pigs, goats, bunnies, alligators, tropical birds, a kinkajou, sloths, a lemur, Kramer the emu, tortoises, turtles, snakes and more! Admission is free, although donations are most welcome. It is located just off College Road on Stock Island at the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters complex. Groups are welcome by calling ahead to schedule your visit. For more information, call Farmer Jeanne Selander at 305-293-7300.

The weekend is complete with the annual Key West Veteran’s Day Parade on Sunday, November 11, at 4:00 p.m. The parade will move down Duval Street, and there will be a reviewing stand near Fleming and Duval. Bands and marching units will pay tribute to American service personnel, both past and present, in a fitting conclusion to a weekend celebrating what makes America great – its people.
